Common E-mail Themes

Addressing some common themes from e-mails:

We get e-mails every day asking us to remove posts. We almost always comply, and our system allows us to delete objectionable material very quickly while letting people check the status of their request. Often the e-mails are well written and courteous, but usually we see some combination of the following:

"You have 24 hours before I contact my attorney."
You don't have a lawyer. Roughly half the people who e-mail us claim to be "contacting their attorney." Sorry, but both of us know you don't have a lawyer, please quit pretending. And the fact that your uncle's friend is a lawyer doesn't count.

"I'm going to sue you."
No you're not... well, you're not going to win anyways. Feel free to try though, I guess. Actually, just kidding, please don't sue me.

"You're clearly a horrible person."
I certainly don't think so, but everyone is entitled to their opinions. Our site doesn't call for salacious gossip, we let students dictate discussion. While I concede that the level of discourse is nowhere I'd like it to be, I'm passionate about giving an open forum for discussion where people can share without fear of retribution.

"These sites are illegal, that's why JuicyCampus got shut down."
First of all, there's nothing illegal about running a site like this. Second of all, JuicyCampus was not shut down, they voluntarily closed due to lack of revenue. It had nothing to do with any legal pressure.

"Awesome site brah!"
Thanks, Joebin.

"Take off XYZ University, no one likes it here."
I don't think you speak for everyone; perhaps you and your friends don't like it.

Anyways, thought I'd address some common e-mail themes in a public space.

Take care,
Peter Frank

  1. I dont think you realize that if you look at posts more than likely most of the posts are about whose a slut or who is a bitch, if you think people really go on here to find out where the best restaurant or party is then your wrong, thats what facebook is for, people come on your website to talk badly about other people because they can get away with it because they dont have to take any responsibility for what they say, i gurantee that if you took a poll on the people who use this site more than half will say its just crap. You keep saying that you dont promote the bad gossip but you do by keeping this website up. its wrong and you know it, of course your gonna say that its not for that but thats what people are using it for, a lot of reputations are destroyed because of this site and you dont even care, thats sad.

  5. Peter Frank (if that's your real name)- How do you sleep at night and/or even care to take credit for this campus online gossip site? Please read the comments left by many of these cowardice, bored, college aged kids - and realize (if you read the newspaper or magazines) that teens have actually committed suicide for being bullied online. Perhaps you will make the news when someone goes after you after their child does something irreversible because they perceive their reputation has been damaged. While you may technically gifted to put together a web site you aren't using your smarts wisely. Do something positive - take this website down - and think of other ways to engage college aged kids in something purposeful.

  8. is it really so difficult to delete offensive posts? otherwise, you're just allowing people to trash each other online. everyone knows the possible consequences of online bullying...or did you just forget the case of megan meier?

  9. You're probably going to regret allowing this website to continue operating when someone gets hurt. You people never learn do you? You can either stop this NOW or you can be held responsible for an innocent persons death or injury or anything like that.

  10. You're dismissing the disgusting things said on the site YOU CREATED (there seems to be a diffusion of responsibility going on here) by saying that the "level of discourse is nowhere I'd like it to be"?! The discussions on that site could not, by any stretch of the imagination, be called "discourse." You must be delusional.

Here's what's going to happen. Someone is going to kill themselves as a direct result of something written about them on your site. You're going to held responsible either in civil court (if you're lucky) or via depraved heart or criminally negligent manslaughter. The press will eat it up. The first amendment does not protect defamation, libel, and slander. More than that, public opinion is against you.

Just because you think you CAN do something doesn't mean SHOULD. It's glaringly obvious the benefits of the site (are there any?) DO NOT outweigh the costs.

  11. Peter, I have a recommendation for your website at the bottom of this post, that you might entertain for a minute.

Fellow peers, come on. everything on this site is crap, and if a higher education student is weak enough to commit suicide about something written about them that is untrue, on a website where almost everything is untrue, then they need to wake the fuck up, and know that they didn't do those things, and know that the people that care about them know that. especially now that peter has really started removing reported posts, and i know several girls who have had posts removed, its just ridiculous to get so upset about something full of such dumb, clearly obnoxious and vulgar content. And if you did do what people are accusing you of, then stand by your work with pride. There are clearly certain types of people who end up on this site with negative comments, and they are typically in more than one conversation:
-Hot people who people are jealous of so they talk shit.
-Annoying people who piss other people off.
-people who do things that attract attention
-the few innocent people that just get fucked (i am one of these people, my college career was on the line because kids said the hallway in front of my dorm room always smelled like weed, which it did, but i was keeping to myself, no harm. anyway, I took proper preparation and got lucky before my room got searched. at the end of the day, it was my fault the hallway smelled, not the kid on collegeacb.)

keep your life private if you don't want to end up on the internet, plenty of people steer clear easily.

    THIS IS THE KEY:

For all people, on all college campuses. I make an effort every day, to smile at everyone i look at, or give a guy-nod-affirmation, to hold doors for people, and to get to know the names of people i see often. But this isn't about what i do, its about how eventually, if you live in any sort of community, ESPECIALLY A COLLEGE CAMPUS!, the love will come back. I SWEAR TO GOD. I'm a normal dude with my own agenda, not especially cool or whatever, and its most certainly not a NICE GUY thing, its just a respect thing.

people are always noticing what you do, and making judgements, just like you do to everyone else, and you remember them. show people respect and you wont end up in a stupid conversation on this website.

    College ACB recommendation:

Perhaps set up some kind of self-monitoring system, where students vote to remove entire conversations. For example, after you post, you have the option to "keep," "delete," or" too soon to decide" the entire conversation. once a conversation reaches say, 20 posts, if the vote is majority to delete, the post is then deleted. And this is just a 5 minute thought, but there is definitely a way people can "self monitor" what is said here in a way that is fair to everyone.

Maybe a true/false button for each post? Set it up so an ip can only vote once per post?

Just some ideas from a GWU kid. Maybe you should give the option to each school to vote. I dunno, the gossip is the good stuff, but kids can do fucked up shit with an invisible cloak.

  12. That's why the site gets slammed with racism and BroFists...it's the only way to stop a forum for libel...by distracting people

  13. Funny stuff. People in the internet are mostly rude since they feel safe to ditch others since there would be no physical contact for sure. I just hope that someday people would be a lot kinder over the net.

  15. I will laugh when you dont take something off for someone who said they have a lawyer and they sue you...Libel involves the making of defamatory statements in a printed or fixed medium, such as a magazine or newspaper.

Typically, the elements of a cause of action for defamation include:

    1.A false and defamatory statement concerning another;
    2.The unprivileged publication of the statement to a third party (that is, somebody other than the person defamed by the statement);
3.If the defamatory matter is of public concern, fault amounting at least to negligence on the part of the publisher; and
    4.Damage to the plaintiff.

College ACB falls under the category of a printed medium, and although is not posting these comments themselves, is responsible for giving the names of the people who do should such an issue go to court. This would look very bad for College ACB and no doubt any jury would award punitive damages for the client against the site.

  18. I hope you do get sued for every penny that you have. I too create websites, but unlike you, I use my genius to create sites for non profit organizations pro bono. My fiance is an attorney who specializes in cyberbullying law suits; personal injury and defamation. He makes his living off of people like you, which is why I can create websites pro bono. Your genius is not determined by your abilities and competence in a subject, but rather the application. Both good and evil people are smart, but only the good are wise and respected. Your application of your wits is neither wise nor respected, so what kind of person does this make you then?
